Neighborhood Guide

East Harlem

From First Avenue to Fifth Avenue, and from East 96th to East 125th Streets
A century ago, East Harlem was poised to become what the Upper East Side is today: a neighborhood of
wealth and luxury. Instead, many landlords began investing elsewhere with the extension of train lines to
outer boroughs. Rising prices and neglect led to disrepair. Through all this East Harlem has remained a
vibrant community. Stoop conversations are always loud and animated amongst a largely Spanishspeaking
population. Respected museums, great apartments and convenient transportation on the 4/5/6
subway line, make this neighborhood one of the best values in Manhattan for those ready to “move on up
to the East Side.”
